What is an AMD?

An Advance Medical Directive (AMD) is a legal document under Singapore law that allows you to declare, in advance, that you do not wish to receive extraordinary life-sustaining treatment in the event that you become terminally ill or irreversibly unconscious.

It's a powerful tool for personal autonomy, ensuring that your medical team and loved ones are aware of your specific wishes regarding medical intervention when you are no longer able to communicate them yourself.

Why Consider an AMD?

Making an AMD offers profound benefits, providing peace of mind for both you and your family:

  • Your Wishes Are Respected: Ensures your personal preferences for end-of-life care are legally binding and followed.

  • Provides Clarity & Peace of Mind: Removes uncertainty for you and your loved ones, making difficult decisions clearer during challenging times.

  • Reduces Family Burden: Lessens the emotional stress on your family from having to make agonizing medical decisions on your behalf.

  • Promotes Autonomy: Empowers you to retain control over your healthcare choices, even when you can no longer express them.
